Which is a genuine shame, because Argos is probably the single most useful shop in Britain for someone moving into student accommodation. Over 700 stores, same-day delivery in many areas, click and collect that actually works within the hour, and a catalogue that covers essentially everything a bare room needs.

Why do student discount sites list Argos then?
Because Argos is a large enough brand that "Argos student discount" is worth ranking for whether or not the thing exists.
Student Beans advertises Argos savings of "up to 50%." Follow it through and you find Argos's own sale categories: up to 50% off household electricals and furniture, up to 30% off selected appliances. Available to everyone. No student status required, no verification, no code, no login. The page simply has the words "student discount" at the top of it.
Independent trackers that actually check are consistent. WorthEPenny confirmed no Argos student discount in June 2026. Save the Student says the same. Student Discount Squirrel notes that Argos is not listed on UNiDAYS at all, and concludes, reasonably, that this is because there is no discount to list.
What does Argos not being on UNiDAYS actually tell you?
That the absence is a deliberate commercial decision rather than an oversight.
Argos competes on price and convenience rather than on brand loyalty. Its margins at the £15 kettle end of the catalogue do not leave room for a blanket 10% off, and it does not need a student discount to attract students because it is already the cheapest convenient option for most of what they need.
That is worth internalising, because it changes how you should compare. A John Lewis kettle minus a hypothetical 10% student discount is still usually more expensive than the Argos kettle at full price. The absence of a discount is not the same as the absence of value.
How do students actually save at Argos?

Clearance is the one worth real attention
Argos clearance regularly carries ex-display and end-of-line homeware and small appliances at prices no student discount would come close to. Microwaves, kettles, desk chairs, fans, lamps.
It is not a pleasant browsing experience, the stock rotates unpredictably, and availability is store-specific. Which is precisely why most people ignore it and why the bargains survive long enough to be found.
If you are moving in during September, check clearance in the specific store nearest your accommodation rather than nationally. Ex-display stock does not transfer.
Nectar is the quiet one
Argos is part of the Sainsbury's group, so Nectar points earned at Argos and at Sainsbury's pool into a single balance.
If you do a weekly food shop at Sainsbury's anyway, and most students near a Sainsbury's Local do, the points accumulate considerably faster than the Argos-only rate suggests. Over a first year that can be worth a reasonable amount off a laptop or a desk.
It is not exciting and it requires no effort beyond signing up once. Do it before your move-in shop rather than after.
Seasonal timing
The three windows that matter for students are back-to-school in August, Black Friday in late November, and the Boxing Day sale. Back-to-school is the most relevant if you are moving in for the autumn term, and it lands conveniently just before most tenancies start.
What should students actually buy at Argos?
This is where Argos beats John Lewis and IKEA on convenience even when it loses on price or quality.
Worth buying at Argos: kettle, toaster, microwave, desk lamp, cheap crockery and cutlery, glassware, storage boxes, clothes airer, iron, small fan or heater, extension leads, a basic desk chair.
These are the unglamorous move-in items. You need them on day one, you do not care what brand they are, and you will not be taking most of them with you when you leave.
Worth buying elsewhere: mattress toppers and pillows, where quality genuinely matters and you will regret the cheap version by November. Laptops, where John Lewis's Price Match and longer guarantee usually win. Bedding, where Dunelm and IKEA are both better value. Anything you want to still own in three years.
One thing people miss: Sainsbury's stocks its entire TU clothing range through Argos. It is not obvious from the catalogue and it is occasionally very cheap.
Check what your accommodation already includes first
This is the most expensive mistake in student move-in shopping and it has nothing to do with discounts.
A significant share of purpose-built student accommodation includes kitchen equipment, and some includes bedding or a full kitchen pack. Students arrive having bought pans, plates and a kettle, and find an identical set already in the flat.
Before you build an Argos basket, find your accommodation's inventory list. If you cannot find one, email and ask what is provided. Ten minutes of admin routinely saves £80 to £150, which is more than any student discount at any retailer would have returned.

Is same day delivery worth paying for?
If you have arrived in a new city with an empty room and no car, yes.
Click and collect is free and usually available within about an hour, which for a first-day move-in beats waiting three days for a delivery slot you have to be present to receive.
The classic error is ordering everything for home delivery on move-in weekend, then discovering the delivery window is Tuesday and you have no kettle until then. Order for collection on the day, walk in, walk out.
Also worth checking: many student residences will not accept large parcels or will only hold them briefly. A flat-pack desk returned to depot because reception closed at 5pm on Friday is an avoidable problem.
