British Airways Graduate Scheme: When It Opens, Pay

British Airways graduate schemes, business placements and internships open in Autumn 2026 for roles starting in 2027. Applications are not open in July 2026. The schemes available change each year, so the list you find on third party sites is often out of date. BA's Engineering Technical scheme has been reported at around £33,000.

If you are here to apply today, the honest answer is that you cannot yet. Join the talent pool and set a reminder for September.

When do British Airways graduate applications open?

Autumn 2026, for roles starting in 2027. BA states this directly on its careers site and offers a talent pool you can join to be notified when applications go live.

Register for it. BA's schemes tend to have short application windows and the notification is the reliable way to catch them.

Which British Airways graduate schemes are running?

This is the part where most guides mislead people. BA is explicit that the schemes available vary each year, and in the 2026 cycle a number of schemes that had run previously were not open.

Programmes that have run recently include:

ProgrammeTypeNotes
Future LeaderGraduate schemeBA's flagship general management route
Engineering TechnicalGraduate schemeRequires a relevant engineering degree
Planning and Supply ChainGraduate schemeOperations and network planning
CommercialGraduate schemeSales, marketing, revenue
FinanceGraduate schemeIncludes a full accountancy qualification
Discover BA Summer InternshipInternshipInsight into the wider business
Business PlacementIndustrial placementTwelve months, for sandwich degree students
Engineering Wales Business PlacementIndustrial placement11 months at BA Engineering Wales, Barry, Cardiff

Treat any list, including this one, as historical rather than a guarantee. Check the live BA careers site before building your autumn application plan around a specific scheme.

What does British Airways pay graduates?

BA's Engineering Technical Graduate Scheme has been reported at £33,000, which sits at the top of the typical airline graduate range of roughly £25,000 to £35,000.

For placements, BA publishes figures directly. The Engineering Wales Business Placement in Barry is listed at £23,875 pro rata for the 11 month term.

One thing worth flagging honestly: students on The Student Room reported that the Engineering Technical salary was reduced compared with the previous cycle. That is a single unverified forum report rather than a company statement, but it is a reminder to check the current figure on the live listing rather than assuming last year's number holds.

What are the entry requirements?

For most airline graduate schemes you will need a 2:1, though some airlines accept a 2:2 with relevant work experience or a strong demonstrated skill set. Degree subject is open for commercial, finance and operations routes.

Engineering Technical is the exception and requires a relevant engineering degree.

The Engineering Wales business placement requires you to be a second year student going into a third year industrial placement as part of a sandwich degree.

What is the real benefit of working for an airline?

Staff travel. Airline graduate schemes typically include free or heavily discounted flights, and for a 22 year old that is worth a great deal more than the equivalent cash. Depending on the airline you may also get international placement opportunities.

The tradeoff is that airline pay at graduate level sits below banking and consulting, and the industry is cyclical in a way that professional services is not. BA not opening several schemes in the 2026 cycle is a live example of what that looks like.

Where are BA graduate roles based?

Mostly Heathrow and the surrounding area for head office and operations roles, with the engineering operation split between Heathrow, Gatwick and BA Engineering Wales in Barry, near Cardiff.

Heathrow is the practical challenge. It is expensive, not especially well served for young professional housing, and shift patterns for operational roles make a long commute genuinely painful. Our London and West London accommodation listings cover the areas with reasonable Piccadilly line and Elizabeth line access, which is the thing to optimise for.
