University of the Arts London (UAL) is one of the best specialist art and design universities in the world. It ranked 2nd globally for Art and Design in the QS World University Rankings 2025. But "good" depends on what you actually want from university.

What UAL is actually good at

UAL isn't a traditional university. It doesn't offer medicine, law, or engineering. What it does (art, design, fashion, film, communication, performance) it does at an exceptionally high level. Six colleges sit under its umbrella: Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, Chelsea College of Arts, Camberwell, London College of Communication, and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Graduates go on to work at the top of their industries. Major fashion houses, studios, and agencies actively recruit from UAL campuses.

What GPA do you need for UAL?

UAL doesn't use the GPA system. That's a US framework. Requirements depend on the course and college.

Entry RouteTypical Requirement
Foundation Diploma (UK)Distinction or Merit grade
A-LevelsBBB to ABB depending on course
International Baccalaureate28 to 32 points
BTEC Extended DiplomaDDM to DDD
US High School GPA3.0 to 3.5 minimum
PortfolioRequired for all creative courses

For US students applying directly, a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 is a rough baseline. But your portfolio carries far more weight than your academic grades. UAL is looking for creative potential, not exam scores.

Is UAL hard to get into?

Yes, selectively. Popular courses at Central Saint Martins, like BA Graphic Communication Design, are highly competitive. Your portfolio, personal statement, and sometimes an interview matter more than grades. Less competitive entry points exist at the other five colleges, with similar quality of teaching.

How much does it cost to study at UAL?

For 2026 entry:

  • UK students: £9,535 per year (undergraduate)
  • International students: £27,000 to £39,000+ per year depending on course
  • Living costs in London: budget £1,200 to £1,500 per month minimum

UAL offers scholarships for both UK and international students, including the UAL Undergraduate Scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for Excellence.

What celebrities went to UAL?

UAL alumni span fashion, film, art, and music. A few well-known names:

  • Alexander McQueen, Central Saint Martins (MA Fashion)
  • Stella McCartney, Central Saint Martins
  • Colin Firth, Drama Centre London (now part of UAL)
  • Jimmy Choo, London College of Fashion
  • John Galliano, Central Saint Martins

Should you go to UAL?

If you want a career in the creative industries and are serious about your craft, UAL is one of the best places in the world to study. The network, the London location, and the quality of tutors are hard to match. If you're looking for a broad academic experience or aren't sure about a creative career, a broader university would serve you better.

The degree itself signals something specific to employers: you survived and thrived in one of the most rigorous creative environments on earth.

Conclusion

Yes, UAL is a good university. A great one, for the right student. It's specialist, London-based, expensive, and globally respected in art and design. If creative work is your goal, it belongs on your shortlist.
