Which halls does Northumbria have?

lat size matters more than most applicants expect. Glenamara puts six to eight of you in a kitchen; Camden Court is nearer four to six. If you know you want a big social flat or a small quiet one, that is the field to filter on before you look at anything else.
Students based at Coach Lane Campus still live in the city halls and commute by bus, so do not rule out a residence because it is not next to your teaching building.

Weekly rent covers utilities and internet, which is the norm for university halls, and students in full-time education are exempt from council tax. You will need a guarantor for most contracts.
Contract length is the number people forget to check. Northumbria offers 43 and 51 week contracts on some rooms. A 51 week contract at £150 a week is £7,650; the same room on 43 weeks is £6,450. Nobody in a hurry to book notices that gap until the invoice arrives, and the longer contract is only worth it if you genuinely need the room over summer.
Private halls in Newcastle sit above university rents. Third-party listing sites put purpose-built private rooms near Northumbria in the £170 to £280 a week range, so the university's own stock is usually the cheaper route in first year.
Is accommodation guaranteed at Northumbria?
Yes, with a deadline attached. Northumbria guarantees a room in university-owned or university-commissioned residences to all new full-time undergraduates who book by midnight on 30 June. For 2026 entry that date has now passed, so anyone booking in August is working with whatever is left rather than a guarantee.
The guarantee is also conditional on booking, not on holding an offer. Registering interest is not the same as securing a room, and every year some students discover the difference in September.
How to book a room
- Accept your offer of a place on a full-time course.
- Log in to the accommodation section of the Northumbria student portal.
- Browse live availability, comparing buildings, flat sizes and contract lengths.
- Choose your building, flat and room, then confirm the booking online.
- Arrange a guarantor and pay whatever is due at the point of booking.
You book before you travel, not on arrival. The university is explicit about that, and it matters most for international students who might otherwise plan to sort housing once they land.
Catered or self-catered?
Claude Gibb being the only catered hall makes this a narrower decision than at most universities. Catered means set mealtimes in a dining hall and less kitchen access. It suits people who know they will not cook and would rather not discover that in November, and it costs more per week while removing a food shop from the budget.
Self-catered is the default and gives you a proper kitchen, more control over spending and a flat that eats together when it feels like it. Most Northumbria students end up here, partly by choice and partly by supply.
The honest trade-offs
Trinity Square is the newest accommodation and it is also the furthest walk, roughly 25 minutes from City Campus. In Newcastle in January that is a real consideration, not a detail.
Lovaine and Claude Gibb are older buildings. Students on forums have said as much for years, though "older" mostly means dated fittings rather than anything wrong, and the rooms are cheaper for it. If your priority is price over polish, that is where the value sits.
Northumbria's halls have historically scored well in national student surveys of accommodation, which is a reasonable signal, but no ranking tells you whether you will get on with the seven people allocated to your flat. That part is luck.
Arriving through Clearing in August
Results day changes the accommodation picture entirely, and Northumbria's June guarantee deadline has passed by the time Clearing opens.
- Book the moment you accept a place. Rooms move within hours in Clearing week.
- Check the portal repeatedly rather than once. Cancellations release rooms through August and into September.
- Phone the accommodation team. Live availability online sometimes lags what staff can see.
- Have a fallback ready. Newcastle's private purpose-built halls hold stock later than university halls, at a higher weekly rate.
- Do not sign a private tenancy sight unseen. A twelve month agreement signed in panic is much harder to escape than a hall contract.
