Yes. Queen Mary University of London runs Clearing every year, with around 246 full time courses and 26 sandwich or placement courses listed as available in the 2026 cycle. Clearing 2026 runs from 2 July to 19 October 2026, and A level results day was Thursday 13 August 2026.

QMUL is the only campus-based Russell Group university in London, ranked 40th of 130 in the Complete University Guide's 2027 table, with over 25,000 students and a TEF Silver award. It is 16th in the UK for research quality.

Availability changes hour by hour during Clearing. Always confirm on QMUL's own Clearing pages and the UCAS search tool before you call.

How does Clearing at Queen Mary work?

Five steps, and the order matters.

  1. Check your UCAS status. Log in to UCAS Hub. If you have not been placed, a Clearing number appears in your application. You need it before you call anyone.
  2. Find the course. Use the UCAS Clearing search and QMUL's own Clearing course list. Note the exact course title and code, because QMUL runs several similarly named degrees.
  3. Call the Clearing hotline. QMUL publishes its hotline number on its Clearing page each cycle, with extended hours around results day. You speak to an admissions adviser who checks your grades against the course.
  4. Get a verbal offer, then add the choice. Do not add a Clearing choice in UCAS until the university has told you to. You can only hold one Clearing choice at a time.
  5. Wait for confirmation. QMUL confirms in UCAS. Until that happens, keep your options open.

Our full UCAS Clearing guide covers the mechanics in more detail, including self-release if you want to decline a place you already hold.

What do you need before you call?

Have all of this in front of you, written down, before you dial:

  • UCAS Personal ID and Clearing number
  • Your actual results, subject by subject, including GCSEs
  • The course names and codes you want, in priority order, usually three to five
  • A pen and paper for the adviser's name and any reference number
  • A quiet room and a phone with signal and charge

The call is short. Advisers are working through a queue and they will ask for your grades within the first thirty seconds. Students who have to go and find their results slip lose their place in the queue.

One more thing: call yourself. Universities generally will not discuss an application with a parent, and it wastes a call slot.

What grades do you need for Queen Mary through Clearing?

Clearing requirements are set course by course and adjusted during the cycle based on how many places are left. There is no single QMUL Clearing grade profile.

What is true in general:

  • Clearing offers are usually at or slightly below the standard offer for that course.
  • Competitive courses, particularly Medicine, Dentistry and Law, rarely appear in Clearing at all, and when they do the requirements are not relaxed.
  • Being a near miss on your original QMUL offer helps. If you narrowly missed your firm or insurance at QMUL, call them first, because they may still take you before your place is released.

For a sense of how selective QMUL is outside Clearing, see our breakdown of the Queen Mary University acceptance rate.

Key Clearing 2026 dates

DateWhat happens
2 July 2026Clearing opens
13 August 2026A level results day, Clearing at its busiest
Mid to late AugustMost places filled; QMUL hotline on extended hours
Mid SeptemberVacancy lists largely settled
19 October 2026Clearing closes

Adjustment, for students who exceeded their offer, is a separate process from Clearing and works differently. Our UCAS dates and deadlines guide has the wider calendar.

Clearing for international students at Queen Mary

International students can and do enter through Clearing. QMUL's student body is 27% international and 5% EU.

Two things change for you:

Visa timing. You need a CAS from QMUL before you can apply for a Student visa, and processing takes weeks. A Clearing place confirmed in late August is tight but usually workable for a late September start. A place confirmed in October generally means deferring to January or the following year.

English language evidence. Most QMUL courses require IELTS or an accepted equivalent. Have your certificate ready when you call, because the adviser will ask.

Our guide for international students using UCAS covers the documentation, and living expenses in the UK for international students gives you a realistic London budget before you commit.

Sorting accommodation after Clearing

This is where Clearing students get caught out, and it is more urgent than the offer itself.

QMUL has nearly 3,000 bedrooms across its London sites, with residential fees starting from around £179 per week for a non-en-suite room, all self-catered. By mid-August most of those rooms have been allocated to students who applied in the normal cycle. Clearing students are usually offered whatever remains, and there is no guarantee it will be your first choice or on your campus.

Do this in the same 48 hours as your offer:

  1. Apply for QMUL halls immediately, even if you are not sure it is the right fit. You can decline later.
  2. In parallel, look at purpose-built private accommodation. It is the realistic backup and it moves fast in August.
  3. Prioritise Mile End, Whitechapel and the surrounding east London areas so you are near the campus your course is actually taught on. QMUL teaches across Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square.

You can compare verified rooms mapped to Queen Mary University of London or browse all student accommodation in London. If you are weighing London areas on safety, our guide to whether Lewisham is safe to live in shows the kind of ward-level check worth doing before you sign.

Also: apply for student finance now if you have not. Payments are tied to your confirmed course and university, and updating your application takes time. See when to apply for student finance.

Should you take a Clearing place or reapply next year?

Worth taking if the course is genuinely one you want, the university suits you, and the alternative is a year with no plan.

Worth reapplying if you are taking a course you do not care about at a university you have not visited, purely to avoid a gap year. Over 50,000 students place through Clearing each year and most are happy, but the unhappy ones almost all made the decision in a panic on the afternoon of results day.

If you decide to wait, UCAS deferred entry explains how to apply now for next year. And if you are comparing London Russell Group options, our King's College London Clearing 2026 guide covers the other big one.
