Griffith University Campuses Explained: Nathan, Gold Coast, South Bank, Logan

Griffith University teaches most degrees from one of three working campuses now: Nathan, Gold Coast, or the Brisbane City campus at South Bank. Logan runs a smaller, community-focused program. A fifth site, Mount Gravatt, stopped operating as a teaching campus in 2025 and is being folded into Nathan, so a prospectus that still lists it as separate is out of date.

Your enrolment letter from Griffith names a "home campus" against your specific degree. That single line matters more than the university's overall size, because most students spend almost all of their teaching weeks at one site and rarely set foot on the others. A business student enrolled through Nathan is not commuting to the Gold Coast for lectures, and a nursing student at Logan is not driving to South Bank for clinical placement classes.

This guide works through each campus: what is actually taught there, what facilities exist on site, and how you get there by public transport. It also flags the Mount Gravatt closure directly, because several older blog posts and forum threads still describe it as a live option.

Nathan: the original, biggest-footprint campus

Nathan is Griffith's founding campus, opened in 1975 with 451 students. It now enrols more than 13,000 and sits inside a 260-hectare bushland reserve within Toohey Forest, at 170 Kessels Rd, Nathan, close to Westfield Mt Gravatt.

Nathan teaches across nearly all of Griffith's study areas rather than specialising in one. The university's own campus page specifically names engineering, aviation, information technology, languages, and law, and the broader campus description also covers business and government, environment, humanities, and science. If your degree isn't clearly a health, nursing, or creative arts program, there's a reasonable chance Nathan is your home campus.

On facilities, Nathan has a library with group and individual study zones, a two storey fitness centre with group classes and an onsite physio, a Multisport Complex with sporting fields and a Squash Centre, more than 30 research centres, and an EcoCentre used for sustainability events and conferences. The campus also picked up a notable research addition in March 2025: the Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Research Institute (QUATRI), including a dedicated test and validation lab built with PsiQuantum. Day to day student needs are covered by a pharmacy, post office, convenience store, and bookshop on site, plus on-campus accommodation and student health, counselling, and welfare services.

Because Nathan is absorbing Mount Gravatt's staff and some of its courses through 2026, expect some building changes and temporary relocations if you start here in the next year or two.

Gold Coast: the largest campus, built around health

Gold Coast is Griffith's largest and most populous campus by enrolment, with more than 18,000 students. It sits inside the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, directly next to Gold Coast University Hospital, which is the reason health disciplines dominate here.

Teaching and research at Gold Coast span most of Griffith's study areas but lean heavily toward health. Griffith's own page highlights business, biomedical science, commerce, and computer science specifically, alongside engineering projects run through the School of Engineering and Built Environment. The hospital location also supports clinical and health-related teaching more broadly, and the on-campus health clinics are open to the public as well as students.

Facilities include a library, gyms, running tracks, and a 50 metre Olympic pool, plus student-run trading rooms and biomedicine labs tied to the business and science schools. Griffith has partnerships with the Gold Coast Titans and Sea World that feed into sport and tourism-related programs. Two G:link light rail stations sit next to the campus, which is the single biggest transport advantage Gold Coast has over Nathan.

South Bank: the creative and performing arts campus

South Bank, part of what Griffith now brands the Brisbane City campus, is the university's creative and performing arts hub. It sits across the river from the CBD, close enough to walk to the city centre over the Goodwill Bridge or Victoria Bridge.

This is where you'll find the Queensland College of Art and Design, the Griffith Film School, and the Queensland Conservatorium, covering art, film and animation, musical theatre and music performance, and video game design. Facilities are described by Griffith as purpose-built studios, performance spaces, and specialised laboratories rather than general lecture theatres, which fits a campus built for hands-on creative output rather than mass lecture teaching.

South Bank is also the most urban and best-connected of Griffith's campuses for public transport. The South Bank Busway Station and South Bank Railway Station are both roughly a five minute walk away, and the railway station sits directly behind the Queensland College of Art and Design building on Grey Street. A separate Treasury Building development is set to open in 2027 in the Brisbane CBD proper, bringing business, law, and IT students closer to South Bank, though for now those degrees are mostly taught at Nathan or Gold Coast.

Logan: the smallest, community-focused campus

Logan, centrally located at Meadowbrook, sits between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in one of Australia's fastest-growing local government areas. Griffith's own materials give slightly inconsistent enrolment figures (just over 2,000 in one place, nearly 2,500 in another), but either way it is clearly the smallest of the active teaching campuses.

Study areas at Logan are narrower and more applied than Nathan or Gold Coast: education, human services, midwifery, nursing, and social work. If you're enrolled in one of these programs, check your offer letter carefully, because Griffith also teaches some of the same disciplines at Nathan and Gold Coast, and Logan is not automatically the default.

Facilities are modest by design: a Logan Workout Room, bookable sporting ovals, and nearby accommodation at UniCentral Griffith with a gym, barbecue areas, a tennis court, and a 25 metre pool. Transport runs through local buses connecting to Loganlea train station nearby, which is the main way most students without a car get to and from the campus.

Mount Gravatt: why it's not a real option any more

Mount Gravatt deserves its own section specifically because older guides, course brochures, and even some current student forum posts still list it as a working campus. It isn't, or won't be for much longer.

Griffith's own transition page confirms the decision to consolidate Mount Gravatt into Nathan campus by 2026, following a review that found the site's facilities were ageing and no longer fit for purpose. The on-campus teaching experience continued through the end of 2025, with the full exit running from late 2025 into early 2026 as part of a planned four-year transition. Most displaced staff, including Applied Ethics and Learning (AEL) and health-related teams, are relocating into a new building, N82, in the arrivals area of Nathan campus. Some of Mount Gravatt's sport facilities are expected to remain open for general use even after teaching activity ends, but you will not be attending lectures or tutorials there if you enrol from 2026 onward.

If any current offer, agent, or accommodation listing still references Mount Gravatt as your teaching campus, confirm directly with Griffith which building and campus your specific course has actually moved to.

Getting around: how connected is each campus really

Transport is where the five campuses differ most sharply, and it's worth being blunt about it: South Bank and Gold Coast are well served by frequent, dedicated public transport, while Nathan and Logan depend more on local bus routes.

South Bank is the best connected site overall. It has its own busway station and its own railway station, both about a five minute walk from teaching buildings, plus straightforward walking access to the Brisbane CBD across the river. Gold Coast comes next, with two G:link light rail stations built directly next to the campus as part of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, giving a direct tram link into Southport, Surfers Paradise, and the wider coast.

Nathan is less directly served. It has its own "Griffith University" busway stop and regular local bus routes, but there's no train line through the campus itself, so most students rely on buses connecting into the wider Brisbane network or the South East Busway. Logan is the most isolated of the active campuses: students get there by bus, with the nearest train access at Loganlea station some distance from the campus itself, meaning a bus transfer is part of almost every public transport trip. Mount Gravatt, while winding down as a teaching site, is still reachable by the same local bus routes that have always served it, since its sport facilities are staying open.

If transport time matters to your day-to-day life, factor it into where you choose to live. A share house or student residence near a direct busway or light rail stop to your actual home campus will save far more commuting time than one that's merely close to "a Griffith campus" in general, since the campuses aren't close to each other.

Frequently asked questions

How many campuses does Griffith University have? Griffith currently operates teaching across four physical sites, Nathan, Gold Coast, South Bank (within the Brisbane City campus), and Logan, plus online study. Mount Gravatt, previously a fifth campus, stopped operating as a teaching site through the 2025 to 2026 transition and is being absorbed into Nathan.

Which Griffith campus is the biggest? Gold Coast is Griffith's largest campus by enrolment, with more than 18,000 students, ahead of Nathan's 13,000 plus.

Is Mount Gravatt still a Griffith campus? Not as a teaching campus. Griffith's own transition materials confirm the site is being consolidated into Nathan by 2026, with the exit from teaching running from late 2025 into early 2026. Some non-teaching sport facilities are expected to stay open.

Which campus should I choose for a health or nursing degree? It depends on the specific program. Health and biomedical science teaching is concentrated at Gold Coast next to Gold Coast University Hospital, while nursing, midwifery, and social work are also taught at Logan. Your offer letter will state the home campus for your exact course.

Where are Griffith's creative arts degrees taught? At South Bank, within the Brisbane City campus. This includes the Queensland College of Art and Design, the Griffith Film School, and the Queensland Conservatorium, covering art, animation, musical theatre, and game design.

Which Griffith campus has the best public transport? South Bank, with its own busway and railway stations roughly five minutes' walk from teaching buildings. Gold Coast is a close second with two G:link light rail stations built next to campus.

Can I study at more than one Griffith campus? Some students do, particularly for combined degrees or specific units, but your enrolment is tied to a home campus, and most teaching weeks are spent there rather than moving between sites.

Bottom line

Check your actual offer letter, not a general Griffith overview, to find your home campus, because "Griffith University" covers four genuinely different locations with little overlap in what's taught where. Nathan and Gold Coast carry most of the university's enrolment and breadth, South Bank is the clear choice if you're in a creative arts program, Logan is small and applied, and Mount Gravatt should be treated as closed for any course starting from 2026 onward. Once you know the campus, transport access becomes the next practical decision, and it varies enough between sites that it's worth choosing where you live around it rather than assuming all Griffith campuses are equally easy to get to.
