I want to give you a genuinely useful guide here, because eating food that reminds you of home is one of the most important and underrated parts of settling into a new city. London is genuinely one of the best cities in the world for accessing ingredients from across the globe, but knowing which neighbourhood to go to for what you need makes a significant difference.

South Asian Ingredients: Southall, Wembley, and Green Street

For South Asian ingredients, whether that's specific varieties of dal, fresh curry leaves, specific flours, specific brands of spice, or fresh vegetables used in South Asian cooking, I'd send you to Southall in West London first and without hesitation.

Southall Broadway has a concentration of South Asian supermarkets and food shops that's genuinely unmatched elsewhere in London. Brands and ingredients you'll recognise from home are widely available, often at prices significantly lower than you'd find in a mainstream supermarket trying to stock an "international aisle".

Wembley High Road, Green Street in Forest Gate, and the area around Tooting Broadway in South London are all similarly well-stocked for South and East Asian ingredients and are worth knowing if you're closer to those areas.

East and Southeast Asian Ingredients: Chinatown and Beyond

London's Chinatown in Soho, specifically Gerrard Street, has several well-stocked Asian supermarkets, including Loon Fung and See Woo, that carry a broad range of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian ingredients. I'd shop here if you're near central London and need general East or Southeast Asian pantry staples.

For more specialist Japanese ingredients, Japan Centre on Regent Street is specifically excellent and stocks a genuinely wide range, though it's priced slightly above the Chinatown alternatives. For Korean ingredients specifically, New Malden in southwest London has a large Korean community and Korean supermarkets.

For Vietnamese ingredients, Hackney and parts of east London have good specialist shops. For Filipino ingredients, Earls Court and Kensington have traditional Filipino grocery shops.

African and Caribbean Ingredients: Brixton, Hackney, and Peckham

For West African and Caribbean ingredients, I'd point you to Brixton Market, specifically the Brixton Village and Market Row covered markets, which have an excellent range of West African vegetables, plantain, fresh scotch bonnets, dried fish, and specialist Caribbean and African products.

Peckham and parts of Hackney are also well-supplied for East African ingredients. The area around Ridley Road Market in Dalston has been a Caribbean and African food hub for decades.

Middle Eastern Ingredients: Edgware Road and Shepherd's Bush

Edgware Road in Westminster is London's most concentrated Middle Eastern community neighbourhood, and the shops and supermarkets here carry an excellent range of Middle Eastern pantry staples, fresh herbs, flatbreads, and specialist ingredients. Shepherd's Bush Market is another well-stocked area for Middle Eastern ingredients, particularly for halal meat.

Eastern European Ingredients: North London and Polish Shops

For Eastern European ingredients – Polish, Romanian, Russian, and Baltic pantry items, there are specialist shops scattered across north London, including around Finsbury Park and in the Polish neighbourhood of Hammersmith. Aldi and Lidl also stock a reasonable range of Eastern European products as part of their regular inventory.
